3 Reasons Companies Hire People with Disabilites

Hiring People with Disabilies is smart business

The reasons are many and too much detail to include here but in brief it is three-fold:

  • Busniess, large and small, find in difficult to acquire talented employees. Forbes reports that the population of the disabled offers a “largely untapped talent pool”.
  • A study conducted in 2023 by Accenture and Disability:IN revealed that “companies that actively employ and support people with disabilities outperform their peers. These companies experienced 1.6 times more revenue, 2 times more economic profit, and 2.6 times more net income compared to those with less inclusive practices. Also, compared to their industry peers, these companies are 25% more productive—measured by revenue per employee.
  • Transcen.org highlights research reflects that fact that “employing people with disabilities taps into a growing market of customers with disabilities, $220 billion in discretionary spending each year. Further, 92% of consumers reflect favorably on businesses known to hire people with disabilities, with 87% preferring to do business with these companies.”

Accommodations Companies Can Provide

The ADA requires businesses of 15+ employees to make reasonable accommodations or adjustments to:

  • the job application process
  • the work environment
  • employee benefits and privileges

Some types of disabilities accommodated include:

  • blindness
  • deafness
  • ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • brain injury
  • cerebral palsy
  • intellectual disability
  • learning disability
  • mental health conditions
  • neurodiversity
  • Tourette Syndrome

A complete list can be found at the JAN-Job Accommodation Network website along with a Workplace Accommodation Toolkit

The ADA National Network offers detailed information about:

  • reasonable accommodations
  • essential functions
  • definition of an “individual with a disability”
  • examples of reasonable accommodations
A young man with Down syndrome is dressed in a white oxford shirt and red tie standing in front of a coffee machine at the coffee shop where he works. His confidence is reflected in his facial expression and body language. This illustrates how companies impact society in two ways when hiring people with disabilities. One is companies can offer jobs to a talent pool of reliabile, loyal and skilled workers. Second, hiring disabled employees can increase the company's productivity.

God often opens doors we never imagined possible.

As you pray for your child’s future, ask Him to reveal their unique gifts and the places where those gifts can bless others—whether through employment, vocation, or both.

I would love to hear about the places your special needs child dreams of working.
